In June, 1989, Ann Starbuck was an American student on a yearís sojourn in China. Pro-democracy demonstrations broke out in Beijing Tiananmen Square and, working as a production assistant for CNN, she suddenly found herself swept up in the middle of historic events. She was there. Assisting camera crews; escorting a dissident to a news interview; making forbidden friendships. She was there.
But it isnít just the story of harrowing conflict and the massacre that followed. Itís the story of a young American woman who fell in love with China, and of the friendships she made there that would impact her life forever.
Ann Starbuck is the writer-performer, and Tiananmen Annie is her very own story. A graduate of the University of Colorado, she performed at the Colorado Shakespeare Festival. In New York, she appeared in Girl Scout Rejects; 27 Wagons Full of Cotton; Salome; Romeo & Juliet; and As You Like It. She was producing artistic director at Blue Sphere Alliance in Hollywood, where she appeared in Fat Chance; Hello From Bertha; Tissue; Solos in Harmony; and more. She was a contributor to The New Yorker and has worked in post-production on the pilot and second season of Game of Thrones as well as two seasons of Black Sails.
Director Richard Embardo is known as a maven of solo performance, helming acclaimed shows including Miles From Myself; Carnival Knowledge; Growing Up with Uncle Milty; Bully For Me; and If Christ Is The Answer, Whatís the Question? His other directing credits include Henry V; Tracers; and The World of Mirth. He is a graduate of USCís Cinema School.
Sound design: Jeff Gardner.
Tiananmen Annie is all the more moving because it is true. Itís a one-of-a-kind narrative making for a unique entertainment.
